Billie Wind, the protagonist of The Talking Earth, lives in a Seminole village on Panther Paw Island.  Unlike her people, she doesn’t believe in the preposterous legends of talking animals and a giant serpent.  The council then decides to punish her doubting by forcing her to live in the Everglades, called the Pay-ho-kee, until she witnesses these folktales for herself.  Along with a playful young otter, a mischievous panther cub, and a slow but determined gopher tortoise, Billie Wind learns the hidden secrets of nature.

This story had some great morals about nature and the Everglades as well as descriptions that made you feel like you were right there, braving the dangers of the Pay-ho-kee along with Billie Wind.  While I personally felt that some things in the story were a little unrealistic, the book itself was a fun read and I really enjoyed the main character’s quirky animal friends.  If you love nature, animals, or survival stories, this book is definitely a must-read.

The incredible story of a young Seminole girl forced to survive in the dangerous but magical Pay-ho-kee, The Talking Earth really helped shed light on my perspective of nature.  Recommended for kids ages 8-12, this book is a must read if you are traveling to the Everglades or want to learn more about the Everglades and the Seminole tribe.
