ABOUT
Welcome to Florida Unveiled! We are Jonathan, Sarah, Hadassah, and Hannah, a nature loving, wayfaring, homeschooling family of native Floridians. Having been born and raised here, we know that there is so much more to Florida than theme parks, beaches, and Florida Man memes, and our goal is to help others find ways to experience authentic Florida. On this site, you’ll find articles to help you delve into all that Florida has to offer, from beautiful natural sites and historic towns to local food and traditions. As homeschoolers, we frequently put together lessons to learn about the places we travel, so we’ve also included educational resources such as free unit studies, downloadable worksheets, book recommendations, and field trip ideas to help kids learn about the fascinating environment and heritage of the Sunshine State.
JONATHAN
I am the tech support for Florida Unveiled. Born and raised in Miami, I spent my formative years discovering Florida’s nature through Boy Scouts, earning my Eagle Scout rank while learning to navigate the intricate waterways, hammocks, and sawgrass prairies that define South Florida’s landscape. The Florida Keys hold a special place in my heart— I enjoy the climate, food, and the slower pace of life. I’m drawn to Florida’s quieter moments: the early morning sun rises, the afternoon thunderstorms , and the profound peace found in a solitary hike in the woods. These encounters with Florida’s natural beauty fuel my passion for sharing the authentic Florida.
SARAH
I am the main writer and website designer for Florida Unveiled. I was born and raised in the small town of Arcadia, Florida. I spent my childhood riding horses, playing outside until dark, and falling asleep to the melodic trill of whip-poor-wills in the woods behind my house. When I decided to major in creative writing at college, I quickly discovered that rural Florida continually infiltrated my writing, inspiring the setting, themes, and characters of my short stories. I love the parts of Florida visitors don’t often see: the tea-colored water that flows in cypress-laden rivers; the chorus of frogs after a hard rain; the rustle of palmetto as an unseen creature scampers by. Some of my favorite places in Florida are the Everglades, the Keys, Smyrna Dunes Park, Bok Tower Gardens, Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park, and St. Augustine’s Historic District.
HADASSAH
I’m one of the writers, photographers, and videographers for Florida Unveiled. Ever since I was born, Florida has been a place of magic and inspiration for me. Being able to share all that Florida has done for me through writing and photography has really been a dream come true. Outside Florida Unveiled, I really enjoy fencing, reading, and exploring new places. Some of my favorite destinations in the Sunshine State are the Keys and Siesta Key Beach in Sarasota, but my all time favorite has to be the Everglades because of its abundance of unique flora and fauna. (Plus it is home to the Florida Panther, one of the coolest animals ever.)
HANNAH
I help with travel ideas. I love fencing, playing with friends, and traveling. Some of my favorite things to do in Florida are climb the coquina rocks at Washington Oaks State Park and dig in the sand and play in the waves at the beach. I also really like exploring St. Augustine, especially visiting the Fountain of Youth. (Don’t drink the water there–it’s gross!)
