Central Florida
Although it is now known as the theme park capital of the world, Central Florida has a rich history that stretches back thousands of years. This area of the state is dotted with stunning natural springs and thousands of lakes and is home to one of the oldest and tallest cypress trees in the world. Its many pine forest and wetlands offer opportunities to view wildlife such as alligators, otters, and deer as well as many varieties of birds and reptiles.
Originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Timucua and Jorora, Central Florida remained largely rural and agricultural for much of its early United States history. Citrus farming became a major industry in the 19th century, and the arrival of the railroad led to a population explosion for areas like Orlando. The development of the space industry in Cape Canaveral and the opening of Walt Disney World in 1971 further fueled growth in Orlando and helped establish Central Florida as a global tourist destination.
While our theme parks are world class, Central Florida offers so much more for the experiential traveler. Come kayak one of our striking springs, enjoy an educational boat tour, or sample some of our delicious produce at a u-pick farm.
